Vertigo

Vertigo is a sensation of movement that is known by many names. Some call it dizziness, some light-headedness or unsteadiness. The word Chakkar ( चक्कर ) often finds its way in the symptomology.

There are various reasons why people may perceive dizziness or vertigo. More often than not it is because of a problem in the inner ear, which is a collection of 5 different sensors for balance on each side.

Modern medicine relies on identifying the precise reason why the imbalance is there before choosing the best possible treatment, which requires formal assessment and various vestibular diagnostics.

Some of them are :

1. vHIT : Video Head Impulse Test checks the function of rotation sensors of the ear for fast head motion.

2. VNG: Video-Nystagmo-Graphy tests balance problems because of brain-stem and cerebellum. It also tests rotation sensors for slow movements.

3. VEMPs: Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials check the part of the ear that detects linear/ straight acceleration.

4. EcochG: Electro-Cochleo Graphy is used to confirm Meniere’s Disease.
